Multicultural Orientation

Multicultural Orientation

What is greatest barrier to positive international experiences?

It is not the language barrier, it is the culture barrier.

We know from experience:

Without proper guidance and understanding of a culture that is vastly different from one’s own, the international arrival to Korea can feel lost and alone. This often leads them to resort to tribalism, thereby preventing integration, enrichment, and growth.

At BridgeKedu, we believe an experiential multicultural orientation conducted with multiple perspectives and an open dialogue is an essential ingredient for creating successful communities.

Our transformative orientation programs will be structured around the core universal principals of open minds and open communication. We will include demonstrations of understanding how assumptions and bias are carried within individuals and cultures and how to manage those cultural differences and even become more dynamic because of such differences.

Strategies will be taught and practiced on how to:

1

build awareness and recognition of such cultural differences;

2

respond reflectively rather than defensively to such differences; and

3

communicate regarding culturally sensitive concerns with others

Our program will include typically overlooked topics including:

  • Standards of physical appearance and dress

  • Food etiquette and storage

  • Values and ideologies

  • Manners

  • Important laws

  • Gender roles and prohibited/acceptable behavior

  • Social characteristics and norms

  • Korean concepts of nunchi, chemyon and hyodo and more

Our multicultural programs will be unique in our highly-engaging and immersive methodology based on our philosophy of “show don’t tell” that will include: audience participation, interactive activities, skits, panel discussions, Q&A and interview sessions, and film, music and media.

Our goal is to create a positive experience of shared camaraderie and to inspire each student to pursue their future in Korea and beyond as globally-interconnected change agents.
